Suburban Lanes in Jackson making significant
investment by installing new Brunswick
Pro Lanes over summer

By Jeff Bleiler - February 20, 2012

JACKSON -- Suburban Lanes will be installing new Brunswick Pro Lanes in its 12-lane bowling center over the summer, the biggest overhaul of the family-owned business since it went to synthetic lanes in the late 1980s.

Though owner Ron Daniels did not divulge a dollar amount, he said the investment is “significant” for the business he and his wife, Cindy, have run since November 2004.

“We didn’t go cheap. We went top of the line,” Daniels said. “This is what the pros bowl on and what’s installed in the training facility for the USBC (in Arlington, Texas).”

The new lanes and approaches will feature alternating light and dark boards, down-lane markings and board lines to help beginning, intermediate and advanced bowlers improve their scores at Suburban, 3801 Ann Arbor Road. The markings will help bowlers with targeting, and the lanes will feature new bumpers that pop up from the sides of the gutters as well as have a glow feature.

Daniels said the new lanes and approaches will be installed over a week’s time during the summer when the business is closed. Suburban will shut down April 29 and re-open Aug. 13.

Daniels said in the late 1980s the current synthetic lanes were laid on top of the original wood lanes that have been in place since 1958. Once the current lanes and approaches are sanded and leveled off, the Brunswick Pro Lanes will be laid on top of them.

Promotional material from Brunswick calls Pro Lane “the ultimate bowler-friendly lane for raising averages and making bowling more fun.”

Daniels said the timing is good to make a move such as this, as he works to mold Suburban into a “one-stop” entertainment venue featuring bowling, a restaurant, a pro shop and a banquet facility.

“With the economic times of today, you don’t hear of people making major investments, especially in bowling,” he said. “How many businesses that are only open 8 ½ months out of the year are still in business or can stay in business? That’s an accolade to us.”

The center is less than two years removed from its last major renovation, a makeover of the restaurant and pro shop in the summer of 2010.

Daniels anticipates the new lanes will help the center fill openings on its fall leagues and help cast away a stigma about the scoring conditions at Suburban.

“A lot of higher-average bowlers complain about the shot breaking down here, so we’re hoping to erase all the negatives about our lanes,” Daniels said. “We are first and foremost a bowling alley and pro shop, a restaurant second and a banquet facility third.

“Our business is no different than any other business. We want to get people in the door, and this is our draw,” he said of the lanes.
