Ron Daniels
Residence: Blackman Township

Position and workplace: Co-owner (with wife Cindy) of Suburban Lanes, a 12-lane bowling center at 3801 Ann Arbor Road in Leoni Township.

Length of employment: 5 years

Family: Married to Cindy for 15 years. Three children: Corey, 13; Chelsea, 13; and Courtney, 22.

Freelance reporter Larry Hook sat down with Ron Daniels to discuss what it's like to be the owner of a bowling center.

Q: What are the requirements of your job?

I do a little bit of everything. I don't think people realize what goes on behind the scenes at a bowling alley. There's quite a bit of office work. I market the business. I interact with customers on a daily basis. I also do anything from bartending and oiling lanes to cleaning up at night and ordering supplies.

Q: How did you become the owner of a bowling center?

I am vice president of the Jackson USBC (United States Bowling Conference). I've been on the board for over 20 years. I was running the city tournament and I took the tournament to various houses. One of the last city tournaments I ran was here at Suburban Lanes. I got to know the owners, and they offered the business to me.

Q: What is your favorite part of the job?

Bowling with my customers.

Q: What makes you good at your job?

I think we try to listen to our customers and make changes accordingly. I feel we identify with the working class as well.

Q: What has been your proudest or most memorable moment at work?

When we brought the pros in to bowl here in August 2006. Brian Voss was our big headliner. Bob Learn was here, too. He has more 300 games than anybody else in the history of professional bowling. We also brought (the pros) back in 2007.

Q: If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be?

I would work less hours... We have a restaurant here that seats 100 people and we have morning leagues here, too, so it can be long hours. We close for the summer, though, so we are able to make up for it then. We're closed for three and a half months. That's what keeps us going.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?

We camp with the family and play golf. Those are the two things I like to do most in the summer when I have time off.

Q: If you could have a dream job, what would it be?

I would love to be a professional golfer and travel the world.
